Before starting your shooting experience at Wallers Ash we have listed some frequently asked
questions below which should be read.
What is Clay target shooting?
Clay target shooting is the art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay targets, with a shotgun.
Who is Clay Shooting suitable for?
Clay pigeon shooting is currently enjoyed by all, young and old, male and female. You don't need any special skills or experience, our expert instructors will be with you at all times and all equipment is provided so you will not have to worry about that either!
What gun will I use?
There are many different types and sizes of shotgun however we only use a small selection which are suitable for instruction. The gun you will be using will be one of three sizes:
- 12 gauge: This is the largest of the three and is most commonly used
- 20 gauge: This is slightly smaller and lighter than the 12 gauge and is becoming increasingly
common within the sport. - .410: The smallest of the commonly used shotguns. This gun is used for younger shooters to
provide an introduction to the sport.
Is it going to hurt me?
No.
Clay pigeon shooting is sport enjoyed by a growing number of people. It is fun and your only
memory of your lesson will be the enjoyment of hitting targets. We ensure that you are not in
any discomfort by:
- Selecting a gun that fits you
- Ensuring that you hold the gun correctly
- Using the appropriate ammunition for a novice
- Using competent instructors
- Using recoil protection if required
Despite the above, if at any stage you do not feel comfortable make sure you let the instructor
know to allow them to rectify the issue.
Is it loud?
Shotguns are loud. It is important that you wear the hearing protection provided to ensure that the noise is reduced to an acceptable level.
What should I wear?
This is an outdoor sport so wear sensible clothing and footwear according to the weather.
If possible, avoid wearing a Bra with a metal clasp near the shoulder pocket.
Appropriate shooting jackets in most sizes are available if needed.
You will be provided with shooting glasses and hats if the instructor believes they are required.
Will I hit anything?
If you have tried clay shooting before and hit nothing, it was probably your Instructors fault and not yours. As with all sports different people will progress at different rates however by employing competent, experienced instructors we have ensured that in over 20 years no one has left the shooting ground without hitting a target.
Do I need a license to shoot?
We hold a current Police exemption certificate allowing us to teach shooters who do not hold a shotgun certificate however certain conditions still apply:
- We cannot allow anyone to shoot who we suspect is under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
- We cannot allow anyone to shoot who is prohibited by law from being in possession of a firearm.
I am taking medication, can I still take part
There are no hard and fast rules regarding prescription medication however as a rule of thumb if you are not able to drive (due to medication!) you are unlikely to be able shoot. Please check prior to attending if this is the case to avoid disappointment.
Can I bring my friends to watch?
Spectators are more than welcome. They will need to wear the appropriate safety equipment so please let your instructor know they will be joining you.
